The Royal Randwick Racecourse is located in Eastern Sydney and it is able to claim that it’s the birthplace of Australian horse racing. That’s quite an accomplishment in its own right. The Royal Randwick Racecourse has a circumference of 2,213 metres and a straight of 410 meters. This long distance track, with wide sweeping bends, gives all comers a chance at the winner’s stand. The Darwin Racecourse has an overall circumference of 1780 meters, and a home straight of 340 meters. The racecourse has a width of 15 meters. While staying true to its southern counterparts, it has a mixed oil sand track, rather than the traditional turf overlay that the majority of tracks use. The Sunshine Coast Racecourse began thoroughbred racing in July 1985. In racing terms, the Sunshine Coast Racecourse is relatively young but has quickly developed into a first class racing and training facility. It is operated by the Sunshine Coast Turf Clubs and is one of the country’s premier courses. It’s located less than an hour north of Brisbane, and just minutes from the beautiful city Caloundra. The Toowoomba Racecourse has a very rich tradition and storied history, and its roots run deep in the local community. It was originally called the Clifford Park Racecourse and was acquired in 1861. The racecourse itself has seen many changes over the years, as The Darling Downs Jockey Club conducted the first meeting there on 6 March 1862, when it was known as Drayton and Toowoomba Racecourse. The Townsville Racecourse, in North Queensland, is actually positioned about a thousand miles away from Brisbane. It has a circumference of 1680 meters, with a home straight of 310 meters. Racing is done in a clockwise fashion. The track has 5 starting chutes, which are used for the different distances that the races have. The track is run downhill starting at the 1000 meters chute and has sweeping turns, which make it ideal to overcome the lead horses. Continue reading →
The Ascot Racecourse, which is located in Perth, Western Australia, is located roughly 8 km just dead east of the Perth business district. The headquarters of the Western Australian Turf Club, the organization responsible for running the racecourse, has their headquarters directly opposite. The track itself features a 300 metre inclining straight, which has been said to be one of the toughest tests for stayers in Australia, even for those competing in the world renowned Perth Cup.
